Anxious and Avoidant Eating (including ARFID): A Lifespan Lens Etiology, Subtypes and Responsive Treatment Considerations

About this event

This virtual event with offer 4 CE

Presented by Katja Rowell, MD and will cover:

Avoidant eating, including ARFID, impacts all ages. Rowell will share a lifespan view, bringing together child development, nutrition, and relational feeding dynamics, with a trauma-informed lens. For eating disorder professionals, an understanding of the early years and challenges, as well as pediatric therapies clients may have encountered opens up opportunities for healing. Also consider how neurodivergence intersects with avoidant eating, and how to support sensory coping, interception, and felt safety. Consider how different treatment “tools” can be used within a responsive approach to reduce anxiety, support exploration, and help clients do their best with eating and nutrition.

During the presentation - attendees will learn how to:

1) List three experiences with food and eating (in addition to choking or vomiting) that may be “aversive.” (Understanding that experiences that make chewing, swallowing, eating or digesting painful or difficult may result in avoidant eating.)

2) List three examples of how neurodivergence (and how common tactics to address “picky” eating) may play a role in the development of avoidant eating.

3) Give a brief explanation of SOS and ABA pediatric feeding therapy.

4) List factors that can undermine appetite cues and interception.

5) Name which ARFID subtype may be more amenable to treatment with CBT?
