Session Description

Introduction to the Integrative Treatment of Eating Disorders. Dr. Emmett Bishop, MD, FAED, F.iaedp, CEDS

Eating disorders are complex and multifaceted diseases which require multiple levels of intervention. The treatment involves addressing the molecular, corporal, personal and social. Failure to do so will result too often in treatment failure. Lessons learned from treating eating disorders can be very useful in approaching other complex psychiatric and psychological problems.

In this session, a proven philosophy and model of treatment will be explained, including medical and psychological aspects of mandatory consideration for the effective treatment of the patient with an eating disorder.

Going Beyond Food: Integrative Nutrition Therapy for Eating Disorders . Dra. Rosanna Mauro de Maya, MS, RD, CEDRD-s and Dr. Aridia Vásquez, MD, MS, RD

Nutrition therapy in the treatment of eating disorders goes beyond the dietary requirement calculations and the diet therapy prescription. It involves diverse core areas that will help the patient to rebuild his/her relationship with food and the body, as well as to challenge beliefs and paradigms that will make total recovery possible. In this lecture, Dr. Rosanna and Dr. Aridia will go through the areas of most important intervention of the nutrition therapist, and will also pinpoint the core skills and abilities that the nutrition therapist must employ to approach eating disorders successfully.

Eating Disorders from a Preventive Medical Perspective by Dr Zuleiko Morillo de Nieto, MD

This lecture will provide an opportunity to learn about the integrative medical treatment of eating disorders. Eating disorders are conditions that for a long time have remained unnoticed by health care professionals in various fields. In the pediatric practice, one of the most frequent reasons for consultations are highly selective children, popularly known as picky eaters, and who at the extreme are known to have ARFID (Avoidant and Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). On the other hand, Anorexia Nervosa holds the highest mortality rate in the adolescent population. We will discuss the high impact of eating disorders on the medical practice as well as the ability to have an opportune medical response to them in Latin America. The level of knowledge that Latin American professionals possess to adequately diagnose, treat and prevent this disorder will also be approached in a dynamic way, with the use of clinical cases to maximize the learning experience and clinical practical applications for attending professionals.

Fundamental Psychological Aspects of Eating Disorders and Body Image by Dr. Julieta Vélez, PsyD

Eating disorders imply a wide range of physical and mental risks on the short and long term, and if chronified generate an ample risk in the psychological and whole person treatment. It is imperative that health professionals become knowledgeable in the psycho symptomatology of eating disorders, so an opportune diagnostic can be made and an effective treatment can be delivered. This could save many lives and prevent greater health consequences. On the other hand, experiential avoidance is a core characteristic of eating disorders, which acts as a defense mechanism in these patients, and with the denial of emotions makes the illness more complex. Working with body image and prioritizing the sensations that are experimented in the body, constitutes a hallmark component of eating disorders therapy.
