Practical Pearls of Refeeding: Relevant Teachings to Guide the Nutritional Rehabilitation of AN & ARFID for Dieticians, Nurses, Doctors, and Therapists presented by Nathalia Trees, MS, RD and Lauren Beaty, RD

Dietitians play a unique role in the treatment of Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). The role of the dietitian focuses primarily on weight restoration, providing nutrition education, and screening for refeeding syndrome. When weight restoration is impeded, patients may suffer from serious medical complications and even death. This presentation aims to identify different evidence-based approaches to refeeding patients with AN or ARFID. Following this presentation, attendees will understand the importance of nutrition therapy as part of eating disorder treatment; be provided with new data challenging current refeeding guidelines for adolescents and adults to effectuate successful treatment outcomes; recognize appropriate nutrition interventions use to support weight restoration; and identify future directions for research in nutrition therapy. Utilizing case vignettes, attendees will learn alternative interventions for complex and/or resistant patients; and have the opportunity to gain valuable and practical pearls of wisdom to integrate into practice.
