Connecting Brain and Body: When Mindfulness Does (and Doesn’t) Matter presented by Natalie A. Asayag, MSW, LCSW
The practice of mindfulness has become a sensation in mental health treatment and recovery, teaching clients how to respect and honor oneself through connecting mind and body. Boasting a variety of beneficial practices, mindfulness serves as an invaluable tool in helping individuals recover from the challenges and trauma in one’s life which often feed the disconnect of the brain and body, promoting negative thought patterns and behavior. While research widely touts the benefits of mindfulness, it is also of great importance for the clinician to consider the benefits and costs of this practice during specific points in treatment, especially when utilized with individuals in recovery from eating disorders and disordered eating. This workshop will focus on providing professionals with a foundation in the connection and disassociation of mind and body as it relates to trauma, applicable mindfulness practices to utilize in treatment and the ability to critically consider when mindfulness is not the right choice for treatment during certain points in recovery.
